Understanding matters
Matters group the parties and contract reviews for a single transaction, so everything for a client engagement sits in one place.
A matter is the container for a single transaction. It holds the parties involved and every contract review done for that transaction, so you can open one matter and see who the client is and what work has been done for them.
Where matters come from
A matter is either created in Curia or linked from a connected practice management integration.
- Curia matters are created and managed in Curia. You can edit their details, parties, and status at any time. See Creating and managing matters.
- Matters from a connected integration (such as triConvey or Smokeball) are managed in that system and shown in Curia as read-only. See Importing matters from your CRM.
The Source column on the Matters page names where each matter came from.
Browsing the Matters page
The Matters page lists your matters under three tabs: Active, Closed, and All. Use the search bar to find a matter by title or matter number.
Each row shows:
- Title - the matter title.
- Matter Number - an optional reference or external system ID.
- Date - when the matter was created.
- Status - Active or Closed.
- Source - Curia, or the name of your connected integration.
- Type - Purchase or Sale, the side of the transaction the matter is for.
If your account has an integration connected, a Stage column also appears, showing the matter’s current stage from that system.
What a matter holds
Open a matter to see its detail across two tabs:
- Details - the matter’s number and description, and its Parties: the contacts involved, grouped by entity and shown with their role, such as Purchaser or Vendor.
- Reviews - every contract review linked to this matter.
Parties are drawn from your contacts, so the same person or organisation can be a party on more than one matter. The matter a review belongs to is set when the contract is uploaded. See Linking reviews to matters.
A contact’s own profile has a Matters tab listing every matter that contact is a party to. See Understanding contacts.
FAQ
What’s the difference between a matter and a review?
A review is the analysis of one contract. A matter is the transaction that review belongs to. A matter can have several reviews linked to it, and it also records the parties involved.
Can one contact be on more than one matter?
Yes. Parties come from your contacts, and the same contact can be a party on any number of matters.
Why can’t I edit some matters?
Matters that come from a connected integration are managed in that system and shown read-only in Curia. Make the change in the source system and it syncs back.
