Creating and managing matters
Create matters in Curia, add their parties, and edit, close, or reopen them.
Creating a matter
Open New + in the top bar and choose Matter. Fill in the matter form:
- Description - optional notes about the matter, such as the property address.
- Matter number - an optional reference or external system ID.
- State - the state the matter is for. Required.
Add at least one party, then click Create matter.
Adding parties
In the Parties section, search by name and select a contact to add it. Each party is added with a role that starts from the matter’s type, and you can change the role on the party.
To add someone who isn’t a contact yet, click Create a contact and enter their details without leaving the form. See Creating and managing contacts.
For a company or trust, you can include more than one of its contacts, using the add-contact link on the party.
A matter needs at least one party before you can save it.
Editing a matter
Open the matter and click Edit matter to open the Matter settings panel. You can update the description, matter number, status, and parties. The type and state are set when the matter is created and can’t be changed afterwards.
You can also click Add new party on the matter’s Details tab to open the same panel.
Closing and reopening a matter
On the Matters page, open the action menu on a matter’s row and choose Close matter. A closed matter moves to the Closed tab. Choose Reopen matter to make it active again. You can also change the status from the Matter settings panel.
FAQ
Why isn’t there a Matter option under New +?
The option is hidden while a practice management integration is connected. Matters come from that system and are linked when you upload a contract.
Can I change a matter’s type or state after creating it?
No. The type and state are fixed when the matter is created. The description, matter number, parties, and status can all be changed later.
